Stefan Greeff Bone Marrow Transplant Fundraiser
In December 2010 Stefan was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia (FA) – a form of congenital aplastic anemia. Fanconi Anemia is a rare inherited genetic condition. It leads to bone marrow failure, leukaemia and other forms of cancers.
Stefan’s bone marrow is not capable of producing normal blood counts, which in turn means that Stefan has a very weak immune system. He is susceptible for any viruses like colds and flu which eventually leads to bronchitis and lung infections. He also bruises easily and therefore cannot participate in any contact sport.
Stefan undergoes regular blood tests and has visited the oncology ward at Unitas Hospital a few times to receive a blood transfusion. You can have a look at some of the news articles on the news page about his blood transfusions.
Unfortunately there is no cure for this genetic disease and the overarching medical challenge that Stefan face is a failure of his bone marrow to produce blood cells. Stefan has now reached the stage where he has no other alternative but to undergo a bone marrow transplant. A successful transplant would help to solve the blood problem associated with FA, and should restore his immune system. He would still have to undergo regular examinations to look out for signs of cancer and tumours.
As parents we will do anything in our power to provide our son with a chance of having a longer life.
